The Lightest Laptop - Acer Swift 5
In this post, let’s talk about the lightest laptop in the world from Acer. Acer Swift 5 is the lightest laptop ever made by Acer. So when you look at the Acer Swift 5, it looks like a fairly unassuming, smart looking, 14-inch laptop. But by the time you pick it up, you maybe thinking that there could be something wrong with this laptop. You might be thinking that there could be no battery inside of it because it’s really ridiculously light. You will really feel it’s ridiculously light when you carry it. You know, this laptop weighs just 970 grams. And for you to know how light it is, I can definitely say you can twirl it between your finger. So here below, you can take a look at the variations of Acer Swift 5 which is the lightest laptop that Acer ever made.
Acer Swift 5 Variations
Acer Swift 5 Design
But we are not done yet, there’s quite a lot else that the Swift 5 offers aside from its light weight, including quite a smart design. It’s made of magnesium alloy, you can have it in the sort of darkish blue color. And aside from that it also comes in gold. It has a 14 inch full HD IPS touchscreen which doesn’t flip all the way back unlike the door hinge would. it goes to about like 190 degrees and already cool for me.
Since it’s packing the latest 8th gen processors which is really a big upgrade if we are going to compare it with the last year’s version. And of course nowadays we really need to get quad-core or even higher chips laptop for us to do a lot of multi-tasking. And since this light machine has quad-core or higher chips, then this is definitely what I’m looking for.
So it really has some strong competition from the likes of the Dell XPS 13, the new HP Spectre, the Asus Zenbook 3 deluxe although, generally for similar specs, they are around at one to two hundred pounds more. So Acer ultrabook lineup includes the Swift 3, the Swift 5. And then of course we’ve got the Swift 7 which was introduced at CES and is in fact the world’s thinnest laptop.
Though Acer Swift 5 does not claim to be the world’s thinnest laptop with the thickness of at around 15 millimeters compared to just 9 millimeters on the Acer Swift 7. But this Swift 5 is really, incredibly light and also it means there’s room for a good selection of ports. but you know, I guess the only thing we’re really missing in Acer swift 5 is an SD card reader. But the good thing is that, it takes all the boxes for i/o. The USB C port makes a little bit more future-proof and you can use any number of adapters that support it.
So I can truly say, it’s not the most premium laptop but I can say it’s truly a smart looking laptop and I don’t think anyone who will buy this will be disappointed when the experience using it.
Acer Swift 5 Screen Display and Resolution
Now let’s talk about it’s screen. Acer Swift 5 has the screen of 14 inch full HD IPS touchscreen. The screen overall is, I can say, it’s pretty good and I don’t really have any major complaints when it comes to it’s screen display. But, let me be honest here, although it’s not the brightest at around 260 nits and it’s not the most color accurate, it covers about 90% of the SRGB color gamut, but only about 66 of the Adobe RGB gamut. And to be technically honest, to the average person that’s absolutely fine already. It really look good but probably not the most accurate one when it comes to ending videos or photos on it using software. But with the ratio of 1500 to one contrast combined with it’s IPS panel, you can already good a very good viewing angles overall. So the Acer swift 5 screen is really nice.
Acer Swift 5 Overall Performance
Now it’s time for us to talk about it’s performance. So, in terms of its performance, the 8th generation chips really make a big difference as I mentioned earlier, they are now quad-core rather than the dual-core. So even if you will do some kind of multitasking or processor intensive computer tasks, Acer Swift 5 is still a last faster compared to it’s previous versions.
Here is also what I want you to know when it comes to it’s perrformance. Basically, it’ll do light to medium tasks so full HD video editing is decent. You can do a little bit of light photo editing ideal for browsing the web, office work, student work, that sort of stuff. Remember, this is still considered as an ultrabook after all. So, of course, it’s not supposed to do lots of incredible and very heavy computer related activities and really power intensive tasks. And in addition, it’s not really meant for heavy and power intensive gaming either.
Now, let’s proceed to it’s graphic dsplay. Actually, The graphics haven’t really been improved that much compared to the previous year’s chips. But the important thing is on the processor side. It’s more on the processor that’s been upgraded. But anyway, you can just about get on with a playable frame rate with medium graphics if you lower the resolution to 720p.
SSD Storage Performance
Don’t be surprised if I tell you that the SSD storage of Acer Swift 5 ins’t that fast either. but no worries, because whether you will be able to notice it or not, I can only say that I’m not sure of it because it’s just a slight difference. It’s still a lot faster and much better than the traditional hard drive which is becoming obsolete now.
What also really impresses me about this laptop is the quality of the webcam on the square 5 although unfortunately it doesn’t support Windows hello. So you can’t unlock the laptop with your face although it does have a fingerprint reader on the palm rest and that does support Windows hello.
Keyboard And Touchpad Performance
As for the performance of the keyboard and the touchpad as a whole, I can say it works pretty good but I really have one complain that I will talk about it later in this post. First of all when it comes to its keyboard, I really like using and typing on it. Why? You know, it’s fully backlit. Aside from that, the keys of Acer Swift 5 are really quite responsive and it’s really nice for me.
Negative Side: Fan Noise is Really Obvious
Now here comes the negative side. The biggest I have experienced with this Acer Swift 5 is the fan noise. You know, Even if you do almost nothing at all. Even when you are just on a desktop or when you are just browsing and surfing on the internet using chrome or edge browser, or let’s say anything, you will really here a constant noise on the fan. So this one I experienced is really a negative side so far in using this laptop. But remember, this is just the one I personally experienced and I don’t know if this kind of thing also happens with the others. So I really don’t know what others have to say about their experience in using Acer Swift 5 laptop.
Battery Life Acer Swift 5
As for the battery life, actually things aren’t that good either. Why? here is the reason why. ===> Acer quotes eight hours of battery life. but I think, in reality, you can just have at about 5 and a half or let’s say 6 hours of using the Swift 5 laptop.
Here is what I just did before ====>
One hour of watching videos in youtube with a brightness of 75 percent and I had the battery saver mode turned on. the result is ===> it comsumed about 14 percent of its battery. So, in short, we can expect at about 6 hours of watching videos which is already decent and fine for me. But I can still say, it’s a little bit disappointing because of the fact that Acer Swift 5 has the latest 8th gen processor.
It is also safe to say that, it is possible that the reason behind all this battery issue of Acer Swift 5 is basically, when you try to check the battery inside the laptop, you will find that the battery of this laptop is smaller compared with it’s previous one. So Acer has just made a smaller battery for Swift 5. When you compare it’s battery with the previous one, last year’s one had a 54-watt hour battery but Acer swift 5 has got just a 36-watt hour battery. So imagine the difference. It’s really a lot smaller, but Acer Swift 5 does seem a bit like more of a form over function.
So in short, they have really compromised on battery life in order for them to reduce the weight of this laptop. But, don’t worry because the battery life is not that bad at all. My example is that I tried testing it by watching videos on youtube and in my calculation, it will last for about 6 hours. And imagine you will not be using this laptop for the purpose of only watching videos on youtube. You might be using it for your office related works, editing photos, videos or some related stuff which is not as power intensive as watching videos on youtube for a long period of time.
Do I Recommend Acer Swift 5
We have already come to the final conclusion. What I can honestly say is that I would still recommend Acer Swift 5 laptop despite the flaws I’ve mentioned in this article because of its lightweight and some other positive sides I experienced with this laptop. And being so lightweight means it’s also portable. I can say it’s basically best for most students and office related works we normally do every day and it can handle full HD photos and video editing. So if you are the one who is in to these kinds of works and you need a laptop, then I would recommend that you try Acer Swift 5 laptop.
I also want to know if you have any experience in using acer swift 5 that you can suggest here. I’m interested to know your thoughts about Acer Swift 5. So please don’t hesitate to leave a comment down below in the comment section of this article.
