Best Tips To Cool Down Your Overheating Computer or Laptop

Have you been experiencing problems with your laptop or computer, like overheating? This kind of computer issue will normally make your PC or laptop shutdown by itself without you doing anything on it. But don’t worry, because there is a solution to every problem that you face with your PC or laptop.

So in this article, you will definitely learn how to cool down your overheating computer or laptop without spending money on your end. You don’t have to buy an external fence all you have to do is understand how windows power management works.

And speaking of how the Windows Power Management works, just follow the steps below:

  • Right click on the battery icon
  • Go to power options.
  • Another way of going to power options on your pc or laptop is to just press and hold the windows key, then press S key while holding down the windows key on your laptop or desktop keyboard.
  • Type-in power options in the search box that appears.
  • Then click on power options.

Now, most of you probably use high performance mode while playing games. That’s why your temperatures can reach up to 100 Celsius which is enough to make a BBQ on top of your laptop.

  • Click Change Plan Settings
  • Go to change advanced power settings
  • Under processor power management, in my example image above as you can see, the minimum processor state says 100% and the maximum is 100%. So if your pc or laptop is set to this percentage value, then this means your CPU will run at full 100% speed no matter what you’re doing so this makes your computer run really hot.

The thing is, you don’t need your CPU to run at full speed while playing game because the modern CPUs are powerful enough and so powerful that if you decrease the CPU’s performance, it will not affect the gameplay and you will not notice any lag.

So now, it’s time that we need to make changes to our laptop or pc power settings to resolve overheating issue. Follow the steps below:

  • Click to enable balance mode which is the recommended one.
  • Click on change plan settings. (the one in the same line with balance mode)
  • Click on Change advanced power settings.
  • Click on processor power management which is the same as we did earlier.
  • Under maximum processor state you’re going to change the value to 99%. There is no need for you to worry when changing it with 1% difference. 1% is not going to do any damage, it’s not going to affect your gameplay.
  • Click OK and let me prove you that this actually cools down your laptop or PC significantly.

You can try running, let’s say four resource intensive apps to test for us to see the results. What I mean is that, to test the new performance of your laptop to see if what you did is effective, you can try running apps that you think the ones that consume most of your cores and ram capabilities.

You just try running 3 to 4 antivirus software if you have such installed in your laptop or pc and I’m pretty sure that those antivirus apps alone can make you laptop hot. But for the sake of the test, you can do it so to test the new temperature performance of your laptop.

Now, when testing the temperature performance, don’t forget to monitor the new value of the temperature of your laptop or pc. You can use CPUID Hardware Monitor to monitor the temperature performance. Please be informed that I am not, in any way affiliated to this software. I just share it here for the sake of this tutorial.

On my end, I tried running 3 antiviruses and leaving some other resource intensive apps open that would make the CPU of my laptop really hot. Then I made sure that I stayed on the balanced mode with 99% performance instead of 100% under maximum processor state as what I mentioned above.  And for the new result of my laptop temperature performance, just look at the image below:

Balanced Mode - How To Cool Down Your Overheating Computer or Laptop

As you can see in the above image, using CPUID Hardware Monitor app to monitor my laptop, current temperature is at 64.9 degrees, the minimum temperature is at 62.8, while the maximum temperature is at 97. And since we are talking about the current temperature performance after making the changes, then we need to look only at my current performance which is at 64.9.

And here below are the applications I ran on my laptop during the test.

  • 3 antiviruses
  • Photoshop
  • VLC video player
  • Microsoft word (this the one I use when I was drafting this article before posting it on my site)
  • Firefox web browser (with 8 browser tabs open and running)
  • Google chrome browser (with 11 browser tabs open and running)
  • Opera web browser (with 1 browser tab open)
  • CPUID Hardware Monitor
  • Snipping tool
  • And some open folders.

As you can see, with all the applications and web browsers all running at the same time while monitoring the temp performance, it’s really a big difference compared before when there was no changes made yet.

Just to give you an idea when using CPUID Hardware Monitor, under value tab of the of this Monitor app is the current temperature, under min tab is the minimum temperature, while under max tab is the maximum temperature of my laptop. As you can see, the temperatures I used after the change were just below 99 degrees.

When I switched back to high-performance mode under power options, remember there is only 1% difference in the temperature I saw a dramatic increase in the temperature value which is really bad. And here below is my temperature value under high performance mode:

High Performance Mode Option

So, as what you can see in the image above my new temperature performance is at 90.6 — 62.8 — and 108.3. This means that my maximum temperature reaches higher than 100 percent and it’s really not good at all.

So as you can see, even for a little change that you will make in the power options of your laptop or pc, there is really a big impact in the temperature performance of the computer you are using which will make your laptop or pc overheat.

So my final thought on this is to recommend you to use the balance mode and reduce the maximum processor state to 99% by just following the steps I mentioned above and you will see and experience that your computer or laptop will run as usual, but the only difference is that it will no longer overheat. So Your overheating issue will be resolved without spending money.
